Global Youth Services Day and Young Volunteers

Young Volunteers Lend a HandWith Global Youth Services Day (which is actually three days) beginning tomorrow, it offers time for the organizations’ leaders to pause and consider the culture of today’s modern youth, and what effect they have on the volunteer landscape.

According to Thomas W. McKee of volunteerpower.com, harnessing the energy of youth has always been something of a double edged sword- especially for a one day event. Short attention spans combine with scant willingness to create a greater hassle than benefit in many cases. Today’s youth, however, McKee maintains, have a lot more to offer then ever before- if you know how to approach things.

They might be as distracted and non-committal as ever, however, says McKee- today’s new generation is actually a lot more motivated and passionate to volunteering- if you give them right kind of coaching and the responsibility to take charge of their own projects.

And, of course, you should always background check your volunteers- you can’t be too careful when it comes to protecting your organization, people, and the people whom you serve.
